WebPEth is a specific marker of alcohol consumption to humans as it is only detectable after moderate drinking. PEth is not detected in the blood of healthy volunteers following the consumption of a single dose (32–47 g) of EtOH, although it can be detected in people who have ingested much higher doses. WebPEth is a phospholipid which is formed on the surface of red blood cells by a reaction caused by phospholipase D in the presence of alcohol and phosphatidylcholine. There are several homologues which contain the same glyceryophospholipid central chain with two side chains of long-chain carboxylic acids.
